Free Packing List Forms and Templates

The Commercial Invoice handles the money; the Packing List handles the reality. This document is the operational map for your cargo. Cargo consolidators and warehouse crews swear by the packing list, it's their roadmap to knowing exactly what's in every box, pallet, or container. Stuffing an LCL shipment or hauling a full one? That one sheet of paper's the line between everything rolling smooth at delivery and some nightmare customs snag that eats your whole day.

What is Packing List?

It is a precise inventory prepared by the shipper. It lists the net weight, gross weight, dimensions, and packaging type for every item in the shipment. Note what’s missing: Price. The warehouse guy operating the forklift doesn't need to know the dollar value of the goods; he needs to know if the pallet is heavy, fragile, or stackable. That’s what the packing list is for.

Why is the Packing List so important?

It’s all about visibility and handling.

  • LCL Shipments: If you are deconsolidating a container, the Packing List tells you which box goes to which truck. Without it, you are flying blind.
  • Customs Exams: If customs wants to inspect "Item B," a good packing list tells them exactly which pallet it’s on. If they have to unpack the whole container to find it, you’re paying for the labor and the delay.
  • Safety: It verifies weight distribution so cranes and trucks don't get overloaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • It needs to match the actual cargo markings. If the box says "1/50," the packing list better say there are 50 boxes. Include the HS codes, accurate weights, and dimensions. "
