What is Packing List?
It is a precise inventory prepared by the shipper. It lists the net weight, gross weight, dimensions, and packaging type for every item in the shipment. Note what’s missing: Price. The warehouse guy operating the forklift doesn't need to know the dollar value of the goods; he needs to know if the pallet is heavy, fragile, or stackable. That’s what the packing list is for.
Why is the Packing List so important?
It’s all about visibility and handling.
- LCL Shipments: If you are deconsolidating a container, the Packing List tells you which box goes to which truck. Without it, you are flying blind.
- Customs Exams: If customs wants to inspect "Item B," a good packing list tells them exactly which pallet it’s on. If they have to unpack the whole container to find it, you’re paying for the labor and the delay.
- Safety: It verifies weight distribution so cranes and trucks don't get overloaded.
